And, as always, excuse my cell phone pictures. I might be the only blogger that doesn't own a real camera.<br />
<br />
<i>P.S. She has an awesome giveaway going for one of her handmade creations- custom burp rags, key chain thingy, baby toy, or sunglasses case. You should enter.</i><br />

<i><br /></i>
<br />
In fact, here are her exact words:<br />
<h4>
<span style="color: #37404e; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">Just finished day one of couch to 10k. I am optimistic that I will not die during this. Madison-</span><span style="color: #37404e; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">I'm still waiting on my dedicated blog post from you entitled "How To Run If You're A Moron and Signed Up For a 10k In 60 Days and By the Way, You Hate Running." K, Thanks."</span></h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Get some proper shoes and socks. New and shiny things are always motivating. Plus they will keep you from getting sidelined and frustrated from an injury later. Socks aren't as important for injury prevention, but believe me from experience-- blisters are the worst. Your local running store will be awesome. I promise. They will get you fitted for shoes and give you all of the new running advice you could ever want- where to run in your town, popular races, training techniques, ect. Also from experience, buy your shoes bigger than you think you need them. Otherwise your toenails will fall off. And your feet will be ugly during the summer. Actually, as a runner, you can go ahead and assume that your feet will never look as nice as they did before you started running (but proper shoes and socks will definitely help).</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiItusnj1vIShSQFhDroDLRXW_0-bmVoF13eauiH_oRZv417cp37UtEbmZOuRFLWLmg4mTjIojP_cJylGFmMOv6RLs8gMlHotcUG_mwNP_RxuGEa_E4rbDRK3OLvudo7ryRUwyXxXPkxnU3/s640/blogger-image-264473140.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiItusnj1vIShSQFhDroDLRXW_0-bmVoF13eauiH_oRZv417cp37UtEbmZOuRFLWLmg4mTjIojP_cJylGFmMOv6RLs8gMlHotcUG_mwNP_RxuGEa_E4rbDRK3OLvudo7ryRUwyXxXPkxnU3/s640/blogger-image-264473140.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Listen to yourself. Sure, listening to advice from seasoned runners is awesome, but there are some calls that you need to make yourself.</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>"Oh these shoes are really great, they are awesome. You should wear them." They might be awesome shoes, but if you try them on and you immediately hate them, don't feel like you need to wear them for the rest of your life.</li>
<li>"Oh you are ready to ..." Motivation from other runners is one of the best things about the sport, but if you feel like you are putting yourself at risk for an injury, don't do it. That is what leads to stress fractures, ect.</li>
</ul>
3. Don't refer to running as jogging. Just don't.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. If you run, no matter how fast, you are a runner.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5. Subscribe to Runner's World (or -Lauren- take the old copies from your little sister). It is confusing and overwhelming at first, but it will teach you all the tips, tricks, and terms. (Just kidding, there aren't many tricks in running. Just miles. But it will help you make your miles more meaningful). I picked up Runner's World when I was a beginner. I am pretty sure it was the marathon issue. I was completely overwhelmed, but I learned quite a few things, even in the marathon issue. They cover everything from shoes and gear to training plans and strengthening exercises.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKr0uJRzXs4rK1gBJOMrlcrpTN7tnqCyL3uSAKMgKolJSrJyEoPl3Ed9AJFlzqeVGCIxYjFnESoM96pqEx_cPjPYaf6Ro67WOW_iIhS0UoauJJTZuSbDUlaNvegB6CUYQgPBryBSIColw6/s640/blogger-image--1559278125.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKr0uJRzXs4rK1gBJOMrlcrpTN7tnqCyL3uSAKMgKolJSrJyEoPl3Ed9AJFlzqeVGCIxYjFnESoM96pqEx_cPjPYaf6Ro67WOW_iIhS0UoauJJTZuSbDUlaNvegB6CUYQgPBryBSIColw6/s640/blogger-image--1559278125.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6. Eventually, you will need to buy a technical t-shirt. Running in a "real" running shirt will change your life. Especially if you live in Charleston. I will do a gear post soon. I promise. Especially because I just got some new things that I am dying to share reviews about.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.oiselle.com/shop/running-tops/flyte-short-sleeve" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitgsFwmmat7-wN-0uz4xm6W6iaAluTYoVUUK9NU6gXKEeADJQGA-Evx0fPpPPwWb3hqRemUjAxobT_uERS3LMgpE2t3NzVtu0seeZCWjR8wXi9juzzeB0ob8bgGCAPzem-KEMVP6BXB2G5/s1600/flytess-orange-f_1.jpg" height="640" width="472" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.oiselle.com/shop/running-tops/flyte-short-sleeve" target="_blank">This one is on my wishlist...</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
7. Get over the fact that you may look like a dork when you are running. Yes, runners may sometimes wear a fuel belt- a glorified fanny pack, or a hydration pack, but nobody is judging you. We all feel the pain. For the record, I had a Nathan fuel belt (for one big bottle) once upon a time. I didn't like it, and I now run with a Gregory Dipsea hydration pack and I love it, but see advice #2.</div>
<div>

</tbody></table>
<div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8lwXCKnM1wYvYIqk3uJ7H3lnvRymQWylTf-8yivY_ihMkkB-YtwY8O4kDvoQ2woqExATZsVyaUTUWqQOfUX20FibDAHdWylXyAPcH2tQr4uqD0zHnnXBbfFgiwHe2ps-43COVwm736Scd/s640/blogger-image--965244158.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8lwXCKnM1wYvYIqk3uJ7H3lnvRymQWylTf-8yivY_ihMkkB-YtwY8O4kDvoQ2woqExATZsVyaUTUWqQOfUX20FibDAHdWylXyAPcH2tQr4uqD0zHnnXBbfFgiwHe2ps-43COVwm736Scd/s640/blogger-image--965244158.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Headlamp selfie. There are now 10 of those on my phone.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /></div>
<div>
8. Find a routine that works for you. Just because everybody else you know runs in the evening doesn't mean that you have to. Find the routine that works best for you and stick with it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
9. (Eventually,) get an app for your phone(free), a GPS watch($$-$$$$$$$$$$$$$), something to track your runs. Initially it is perfectly fine to run by time (and even some very, very, very advanced runners still run by time), but I prefer knowing how far/fast I have run.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4npEQnwHtef5kPl2hfmOHLpa2hhHzf1Cehx5unwMBCBbH3LuYrBev-U2dp0vpYGl5JQTJLoZ6_tbomPlcfhyphenhyphenUdZ1-p7j7XPvfBwlq-tgzeQQEzZnuG-0LorJyWFCIpwTUJ65bVjw7SM5Y/s640/blogger-image-1061215591.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4npEQnwHtef5kPl2hfmOHLpa2hhHzf1Cehx5unwMBCBbH3LuYrBev-U2dp0vpYGl5JQTJLoZ6_tbomPlcfhyphenhyphenUdZ1-p7j7XPvfBwlq-tgzeQQEzZnuG-0LorJyWFCIpwTUJ65bVjw7SM5Y/s640/blogger-image-1061215591.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
10.Have fun. I know this is cliche, but you won't keep doing something that you hate, so enjoy it.</div>

Bridges are closed. Everything is closed. The roads are yucky, and so are the sidewalks. So naturally I had to go for a run after the news anchor told me to stay off of the sidewalks. Now, I am not an expert at winter running. Winter running is a very rare thing in Charleston. Cold weather- sometimes. Snow- very rarely. I had fun trying not to fall on my face though. (And it was slow, but successful).<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Thomas, my brother-and-law, came to pick me up bright and early at 5:45 to carpool to Kiawah. Unfortunately, I slept through all my alarms, but fortunately Thomas was there to wake me up or I probably would have slept through the race. Luckily, we made it to the race with plenty of time to spare. We took a bus to the start from a parking lot since there is not enough parking on the race itself. We met some very nice marathoners who we had a conversation with. This was slightly intimidating too- he wanted to run a very fast marathon- all I wanted to do was run a sub-2:00 half-marathon. Oh well. He was nice. As most runners are.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We got to the start. I lined up with the 9 minute mile pacer. The first two miles clocked in at an 8'30" pace. Waaayyyyy to fast. I double checked the sign- 9' mile pace. So I slooooweeed waaayyyy down. Sooooo much energy wasted. Boo. Boo. I was able to maintain my pace for the next few miles, but by mile 8 I was all done. The last 5 miles were rough.</div>

Training for this was a bust. Sleep got chosen a lot of times over training. My long runs were better than normal, but overall training was worse. Disappointing race for sure, but the course, volunteers, and employees of the resort were awesome!! The aid stations were well stocked and well organized. The food afterwards was delicious and everything about the race was well done. No complaints. My time was disappointing, but I really enjoyed the race.<br />

I have had a foam roller forever (made one <a href="http://runningshoesandsunshine.blogspot.com/2013/04/foam-roller.html" target="_blank">here</a>), but haven't been using it to its fullest potential. 2. Plantar Warts* A plantar wart may look like a little bump with a pinhole through it. Mine was little bitty and it felt like I had an embedded splinter in my foot. PSA: it doesn't have to look like your typical wart (cauliflower pattern). Your foot callusing (runners- I am talking to you)- might just cover it up. I went to the doctor because I thought I had something stuck in my foot. I waited for 30 minutes only for my doctor tell me it was a wart after a 3 second look at it. Awkward taco moment.<br />
<div>
<br />
Also, under no circumstances should you ever look up plantar warts on google images, that was gross. And, I learned that my foot problems do not compare to others'.</div>

Somebody knitted a scarf and ran a marathon <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/02/sports/a-running-record-falls-longest-scarf-knitted-in-a-marathon.html?_r=0" target="_blank">here</a>. Crazy.<br />
<br />
5. I ate McDonalds after a Thanksgiving feast. My sister and I ate Thanksgiving as lunch, got hungry at 9 pm before going black friday shopping at 10. Nothing was open except McDonalds. Bad decision. My stomach was not happy during all the shopping (even though I only had a snack wrap- although my sister's decision to eat a cheeseburger was probably more painful). Also trying on clothes after a Thanksgiving meal is difficult. I definitely had a food baby.</div>

<br /></h2>
<h2>
Why You Should Give Blood:</h2>
<br />
I gave blood today. Here is why you should consider it:<br />
<br />
1. It saves lives (the most important thing).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6ZkUsmvY5QRnLwt4ctI-Axvs-iUcvuqp63LkBLFgp8fUkz8xdmC6r9hKooJ2dcGGlH3GBT5mvDNupPmO81kPMipJZNd7ikc9t1NwUtHl15EHVrS7q4MiLcDW3OSeFBgOrpaRTAKClm_fd/s1600/red-cross-blood.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6ZkUsmvY5QRnLwt4ctI-Axvs-iUcvuqp63LkBLFgp8fUkz8xdmC6r9hKooJ2dcGGlH3GBT5mvDNupPmO81kPMipJZNd7ikc9t1NwUtHl15EHVrS7q4MiLcDW3OSeFBgOrpaRTAKClm_fd/s640/red-cross-blood.jpg" width="600" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. There are free cookies afterwards! (Today we even had Chick-fil-a)!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. You can figure out your blood type. For free. People pay money for that- the Red Cross sends you a card with that info on it- fo' free!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. You can justify that piece of Reese's Cheesecake after dinner. It was soooo good!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. If you forget to tell them to do it in your non-dominant arm (like I did)- you don't have to do much with that arm for the rest of the day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(Those were meant to be humorous-- do it to save lives!! The rest are just fun perks!)</div>
<h2>
Running and Blood Donation</h2>

Ok, it is not advisable to do this one week out from a race, but if you do it mid-week, surrounded by easy runs, you will be fine. Check with the organization you are donating with and they will tell you how it should affect you, when not to exercise, ect. Runner's World has also written some articles about the best way to cycle it into your training:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. <a href="http://www.runnersworld.com/running-tips/7-strategies-giving-blood-while-running-and-racing" target="_blank">7 Strategies for Giving Blood While Running and Racing</a></div>

2. <a href="http://www.runnersworld.com/health/say-i-donate-blood-how-long-till-im-back-normal" target="_blank">Say I Donate Blood. How Long 'til I'm Back to Normal?</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
Iron</h2>
<div>
Eat your iron before you go (and in life in general). They will test you for iron so that your body can healthily regenerate blood cells after you give blood. This is especially for women athletes (so most of us)- it is possible for our iron to get low- so watch out.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
The Process</h2>
<div>
1. Sign in.</div>
<div>
2. Mini Physical- blood pressure, health and travel risks, temperature, ect. (They don't want sick/infectious people donating... obviously).</div>
<div>
3. Then they sit you down in the chair with a stress ball. They clean your arm, give you a Sprite (so you don't pass out), and mark your vein. Here comes the fun part- the stick. The lady will say "You will just feel a little poke." Wrong. I looked down and the needle was, in the words of my father, "the size of a drinking straw." Yes, it was VERY large. I was bit worried, but once it is in, you mostly can't feel it. The actual "insertion" hurt a little bit, but it was not terrible. Don't let the big needle deter you. Honestly, it is not that big of a deal. Blood will flow out into a bag. They take the needle out, and put a band-aid and a wrap on your arm when it stops bleeding.</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYQT_XUXyOkv8W275RCR88-U5NnpL3xvwrUo3UBDjh4efwb5tK23b2FwDfo6-IltTpJDuGmamYVLmZL6UnJKrBx5d33q0nt5Qysfxq0sh6QgGOdMTElRt6LPeugJzMcnZClFTKUJRf4ya1/s640/blogger-image-752879268.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYQT_XUXyOkv8W275RCR88-U5NnpL3xvwrUo3UBDjh4efwb5tK23b2FwDfo6-IltTpJDuGmamYVLmZL6UnJKrBx5d33q0nt5Qysfxq0sh6QgGOdMTElRt6LPeugJzMcnZClFTKUJRf4ya1/s320/blogger-image-752879268.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. The Feast- cookies, pretzels, food so you don't pass out! Yummy!<br />
5. Your arm will be a little sore, but it is well worth it. (Next time, I will ask for it on my left arm, because it made writing, driving, ect. difficult for the first few hours-- which is why I am currently typing).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't judge you for not giving blood, but if you are able, please consider donating.</div>

<br />
Race "Bucket List"<br />
<br />
1. Downhill at Dawn- this is a downhill (hence the name) half marathon that starts early in the morning: at 6:00. It runs through the mountains of North Carolina near our mountain house so it would be fun. All of that downhill running would be painful, I am sure, but better than uphill, right?!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAmBIvSyJgeo0AXXEPfW1TZYGNFFmNp16UaKpjslAKr33mr05srXJsqSaJIUJWC7EDp5iV6p9kS-ZUwFrn-jEh9N3tdmiGdlysJp5fZ0yZy_lfcZgzJsLhAU5QKB2Ob6TPz63lrWYg_Ul3/s1600/Downhill@Dawn_11x17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAmBIvSyJgeo0AXXEPfW1TZYGNFFmNp16UaKpjslAKr33mr05srXJsqSaJIUJWC7EDp5iV6p9kS-ZUwFrn-jEh9N3tdmiGdlysJp5fZ0yZy_lfcZgzJsLhAU5QKB2Ob6TPz63lrWYg_Ul3/s320/Downhill@Dawn_11x17.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Boston Marathon- some people are opposed to having a race that you have to qualify, and I agree that running should be an open sport, but I think that it is kind of cool that you have to qualify. This might be distant- I am not ready for a marathon, yet, and I definitely have some time work to do, but I really want to do it. Especially because of what happened this past year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/04/15/177328979/africans-win-at-boston-marathon" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQoiJoCDM9KQHuEfFWwTNsZqUn3Cv9nMj9H4urGgjxAZu_0l958hpE9wloII-DkRBajNpS8J_VnzWgA7Rw6Yqt14Dw-hCKwL-pSQsuqBG_8qZiMm69yeDsWpB0R8g3dq1m1dN54UQt-Mgr/s320/boston.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
3. Nike Women's Half-Marathon Washington DC<br />
I love Washington DC and I really really wanted to run this race last year, but it was just too far to go for two days! I want to run it someday because I have heard Nike puts on a good race and I love DC so of course I want to run this race.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://nikeinc.com/news/joan-benoit-samuelson-shalane-flanagan-join-15-000-for-nike-women-half-marathon-dc#/inline/19623" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7m86JYzOzkfnlIXO6VxMlA1R37T5A9rXQy9E6wW3AwXTMx6-mXSYArRluUtOQtUV8cG71o-fpSz1rO_ykS5E2ffpKzKDn3henr-X3llB_Mw8csVh4rmHkZWWUXxpgyT497JOAPQzlTuWH/s320/Nike_Women_Half_Marathon_DC_h_large.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Those are the three for now and I know that they pop into my head all the time, so I will have to do an updated post (or maybe a tab) later!</div>
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932308824546671753.post-13519489329021599672013-09-28T23:16:00.002-04:002013-10-27T22:19:24.461-04:00They call it pacing for a reason. (ALS HOPE Race Recap)You know how your gym teacher always told you not to sprint the first lap, to save some for the end? Well, as a distance runner, you would think I would listen to this theory. I listen to this theory (law) during longer races, but on Saturday I decided on the following plan: hold onto the fastest pace I can possibly go from the start. That didn't work. It resulted in the opposite of negative splits. Granted, this was not a goal race by any stretch of the imagination. It was a race for a cause I support, but it was still disappointing because you would think I would know better.<br />
<br />
7:30 am: I woke up on my own (no alarm clock).<br />
8:00 am: Breakfast: Banana Muffins (and not the healthy kind)- Breakfast of Champions, I know.<br />
9:00 am: I attempted to study, but I fell asleep instead.<br />
1:00 pm: I woke up and I was very hungry. I was also surprised that I slept for 4 hours. I ate the lunch of apples and Macaroni and Cheese. The Kraft kind. I know, my nutrition choices were not great.<br />
2:00 pm: I sat around and took another nap. Man I was tired!!!! That is what no sleep during the week will do to you. I need to work on that.<br />
4:00 pm: I woke up for the third time in one day and got dressed for the race.<br />
5:00 pm: Left for the race.<br />
6:00 pm: "Gun goes off." Really: a guy in a lawn chair says "Ready, Set, Go!"<br />
6:01 pm: I have the genius idea of sprinting.<br />
6:07 pm: My idea fails. I am getting tired, but I am still below an 8' mile pace.<br />
6:15 pm: Oh no. Worst 5K ever. My stomach is upset. My legs are burning from the sand.<br />
6:15-6:31 pm: Run/ Walking/ Hobbling to the finish. No good.<br />
<br />
I finally finished in 31:00ish. I was super disappointed with my time, but not every race can be a good one and I did absolutely nothing to prepare for this race specifically and it was just an off day. I am still super proud that I went and supported a great cause (ALS support) and I had a blast doing it (except for during the actual race).<br />
<br />
On the bright side, I still got first place in my age group (this was a super tiny race)! I now have a brand new shiny medal (on sparkly ribbon) to add to my collection!<br />

It is a 5K on the beach to support research and care of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTGHmJDUnl7OYK2BLj-RTpKll8-SnFc3iP9n4gm74PVF-8-Py8s_xld2KqopPoJQw8WmdCRgkmSHJwgVfpgGMa-ADdIdYFZvpSB46CxgxfhGmfu4SOjqS_hjunARd9SddIT-s20OBbkq4/s1600/als.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxTGHmJDUnl7OYK2BLj-RTpKll8-SnFc3iP9n4gm74PVF-8-Py8s_xld2KqopPoJQw8WmdCRgkmSHJwgVfpgGMa-ADdIdYFZvpSB46CxgxfhGmfu4SOjqS_hjunARd9SddIT-s20OBbkq4/s320/als.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
<br />
From the ALS Association Webpage:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;">
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;">
A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A" means no or negative. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "Trophic" means nourishment–"No muscle nourishment." When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or wastes away. "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates it leads to scarring or hardening ("sclerosis") in the region.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px;">
As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer send impulses to the muscle fibers that normally result in muscle movement. Early symptoms of ALS often include increasing muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing. When muscles no longer receive the messages from the motor neurons that they require to function, the muscles begin to atrophy (become smaller). Limbs begin to look "thinner" as muscle tissue atrophies.</div>
</blockquote>
My aunt passed away from ALS so I am running for her. It is a really small race in Charleston, but it is for a really good cause! I encourage you to search for ALS races in your area because it really is a great cause. Money is used for care (medical care, equipment, support services) and research- both of which are desperately needed.<br />
<br />
Race Goals:<br />
I have been training for a half-marathon, and I am in the middle of training for that so I am not expecting a PR out of this race, but who knows?<br />
<br />
A Goal: Sub-25:00- It has been done before, but not recently.<br />
B Goal: Age Group Place- Like I said, this is a really small race so it isn't super competitive, but it is always a goal to shoot for.<br />
C Goal: Sub-27:00- So goal pace for my half-marathon, so hopefully I will be able to do it in a 5K (I had a super-successful speed work session this week so I am hopeful)!<br />
<br />
I am going to try to do a race report before next Saturday, but we will see!<br />
<br />
Don't forget: look for a race for ALS in your area if you are looking for your next race. If you have trouble finding one, contact me and I can help!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932308824546671753.post-73470819869154283442013-09-14T11:48:00.001-04:002013-09-14T11:49:48.046-04:00I like this weather.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7mJErEabGP3RhfaR-SHOYQzSRWcwI7w-eBmowWu-WMOTl4q7OknDZCPeZK6xGCqWX1VzGMBoSXyARi-vOJ1i1JWDzjEHd-J8VctHncR95YNQjc5bxq1s6G1YCK1GBCDGinYx5o65UNCE9/s640/blogger-image--1254064770.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7mJErEabGP3RhfaR-SHOYQzSRWcwI7w-eBmowWu-WMOTl4q7OknDZCPeZK6xGCqWX1VzGMBoSXyARi-vOJ1i1JWDzjEHd-J8VctHncR95YNQjc5bxq1s6G1YCK1GBCDGinYx5o65UNCE9/s640/blogger-image--1254064770.jpg"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Look: I woke up late and it still wasn't a bajillion degrees outside! If I were to normally wake up this late (well this was even after my run), it would be at least 90 with at least 70% humidity. Today it was only 80 after my run AND breakfast! This is awesome. Well except for the fact that if I wake up late, I always get side stitches. Like every single time. I have no clue why.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
My four mile run got cut short after a very long, slow, painful mile (think snail speed). I will try to go back out this afternoon to finish my run, but I thought this weather was so worth sharing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Update on my break: I am back. The last month has been the craziest month ever. I had a guest at my house for two weeks which was absolutely fantastic (playing tourist in your own town is great- you should try it, I learned so much about the place I have always lived), but it also took up so much of my time and then with school starting I have had no time! I really am going to try to post at least once every week. I think Saturdays will be my definite days so check out my blog early Saturday afternoons, and I <i>should</i> have a post!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Update on training: like I said, it has been crazy around here the last month. I have been running, but not as much as I should have been. Good thing my race isn't until December! I am so excited to be back <b>training</b> again! Oh serious running, how I have missed you!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Shoes: I ordered the Brooks Ghost 5s on clearance on the Brooks website. I love them. I took a leap of faith ordering a new pair of shoes online, but I have the Brooks Launch which I love, I was just looking for something with a little bit more support for longer runs. I have only run 4 miles in them so far (I just got them), but I love them! I will do a more formal review in a little bit after I have logged a few more miles in them.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvwOC7f8ZpyQFhQ67cbWGgihKwfbdWgxptbiEOCt8OIs2YegUErL4C0UXr1o6a-Rzh2rP1xfPZByKjKpm4lnrOR9efL6B_KdKQy5XB0wW4XviC36HCvMp-kaAsalI0mSnGDE-QxNVA87_3/s640/blogger-image--258760763.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvwOC7f8ZpyQFhQ67cbWGgihKwfbdWgxptbiEOCt8OIs2YegUErL4C0UXr1o6a-Rzh2rP1xfPZByKjKpm4lnrOR9efL6B_KdKQy5XB0wW4XviC36HCvMp-kaAsalI0mSnGDE-QxNVA87_3/s640/blogger-image--258760763.jpg"></a></div><br></div>

<br />
Goal Part 1: Head for the trails.<br />
Status:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUweHH9zSRP3UqxKflOtNj8WAmW7GiK3yJ1UpjNnC0RCDAb2bGJ0xXrmolRjdm7692a41Gk6h9vghVckLyZHskbBnok2lA1qB3Z9icYP0ZDTRx-5d7G0Ssx_uvthllCzAfTkSXFn2KBhkU/s1600/Imcomplete,+please+finish.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUweHH9zSRP3UqxKflOtNj8WAmW7GiK3yJ1UpjNnC0RCDAb2bGJ0xXrmolRjdm7692a41Gk6h9vghVckLyZHskbBnok2lA1qB3Z9icYP0ZDTRx-5d7G0Ssx_uvthllCzAfTkSXFn2KBhkU/s1600/Imcomplete,+please+finish.jpeg" /></a></div>
I have not gone to the trails yet (I haven't done that much running this week).<br />
<br />
Goal Part 2: Schedule the workouts you like to do.<br />
Status:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9B9GjfQ-HaY1K9Y9IKcdpP5E5RTftTbx9GAybB_oKAXi6s2AIIX4b4Eegf87H7Y2Fcg5unrvKBt2oVCF1Vy-SsyoGQ-y1RhoZ6jP8ebW49JtT-AunFdMpXQYGn-dq6XoJ3TAI8-ercOp2/s1600/in+progress.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9B9GjfQ-HaY1K9Y9IKcdpP5E5RTftTbx9GAybB_oKAXi6s2AIIX4b4Eegf87H7Y2Fcg5unrvKBt2oVCF1Vy-SsyoGQ-y1RhoZ6jP8ebW49JtT-AunFdMpXQYGn-dq6XoJ3TAI8-ercOp2/s1600/in+progress.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I tried to do hill repeats not once, but twice this week, but my ...monthly cramps... decided that they did not want me to do hill repeats. Bummer. I tried. I really did, but each time I only got through one repeat. I will try again, although I know my next few weeks are going to be filled with pretty boring, easy runs (beginning of a training cycle).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Goal Part 3: Set Goals</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXOoYYYU8QrYgZZ9eGMoQj0f3t5OiWBcSC07sVs4aipNXJJWvCUl_cJJ7gKJ_TX77elVSLdxB8U7HXfjH29-2NJ7pOeQxemAJYy-tmUYaWwGSpipi4zLcsLlkOA_TKRBchopbxc6Y2cAJa/s1600/under+construction.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXOoYYYU8QrYgZZ9eGMoQj0f3t5OiWBcSC07sVs4aipNXJJWvCUl_cJJ7gKJ_TX77elVSLdxB8U7HXfjH29-2NJ7pOeQxemAJYy-tmUYaWwGSpipi4zLcsLlkOA_TKRBchopbxc6Y2cAJa/s1600/under+construction.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4-Week Goal: Consistent in half-training.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't start until tomorrow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3-Month Goal: Blog twice a week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Done for this week (barely, I almost forgot to blog tonight).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6-Month Goal: Sub 2:00 Half-Marathon</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That is a long way away.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I am not even going to recap my weekly training because I really didn't have anything specific planned.<br />

It is a great blog run by a physical therapy student (and obviously a runner). She kept talking about Overnight Oats, so of course I had to try them. The idea is simple: combine a few ingredients together the night before and enjoy a yummy breakfast the day of. I am in love. I may never eat anything else for breakfast ever again. They were just so delicious.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8g95q4EZZxc/UgW4p-c61GI/AAAAAAAAAck/AlQ9eXKJaqQ/s1600/13+-+1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8g95q4EZZxc/UgW4p-c61GI/AAAAAAAAAck/AlQ9eXKJaqQ/s320/13+-+1" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is the recipe:<br />
<br />
Combine all ingredients, then put in the refrigerator overnight. "Flavor" in the morning.<br />
<br />
1/4 Cup Old Fashioned Oats (Not those quick ones, the "real" ones).<br />
1/4 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt (I just bought a big container of it and I have been using it for all sorts of recipes lately-- including delicious Tzatziki sauce that I will post a recipe for soon).<br />
1 1/2 Teaspoons Chia Seeds (She told me not to skip them. I got them at Whole Foods in the Bulk Foods section).<br />
1/3 Cup Milk (can substitute almond milk)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaLeyjfh2bKfgPn3T2cdjE7lO0u7a4CGDx_NfuW0f7X6XktK1IlHtUl2eKcj0mydaUPL46Lyo4qoVz3srkdglDcE0EM4rXXqzn5_nt6NkD9Gydrs08cexjOOr2m-bxvjvxlJLKeAHHEyoq/s1600/overnight+oats.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaLeyjfh2bKfgPn3T2cdjE7lO0u7a4CGDx_NfuW0f7X6XktK1IlHtUl2eKcj0mydaUPL46Lyo4qoVz3srkdglDcE0EM4rXXqzn5_nt6NkD9Gydrs08cexjOOr2m-bxvjvxlJLKeAHHEyoq/s320/overnight+oats.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I made mine with strawberries and Nutella (add in the morning), but she had some other suggestions:<br />
Honey, Banana, and Peanut Butter<br />
Blueberry Cobbler<br />
Pumpkin Pie<br />
Nutella Banana<br />
<br />
<br />
Half-Marathon training starts on Sunday and I am so excited to be back in a routine again! Wahoo!!!<br />

I am so excited to be able to present y'all with such an awesome giveaway as my very first giveaway. I have never done the Color Run as I am planning to run my first in March, but I will give you all the details!!!<br />
<br />
The Color Run is also known as the happiest 5K on the entire planet. That is pretty exciting!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/rWjdrHCeG8U" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
It is a 5K run where you get covered in colored powder at each kilometer. The Color Run has two "rules:"<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
1. Wear white at the starting line.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
2. Finish plastered in color.</blockquote>
<br />
Another thing I already love about the Color Run is the charity connection. Even though the Color Run is a for-profit organization, it has an emphasis on charity. In each city, The Color Run partners with a charity. The partnerships happen in different capacities, but it is great knowing that you run for a cause! It just makes running that much better!<br />
<br />
Nervous about being covered in color? Don't be, none of these people look worried. They are all ecstatic to be running covered in color!! I can't wait to try this! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thecolorrun.com/gallery/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLX9yjQnFeaPEkuJwagJ60TTyHD_AeTSMPfpalUzwzQhPFtJG9RDG6gWP0p4sQtQcE-q5sE8BPScLFJOdcGYtXjYt1p2zYyS5CUzCmDU-eut5uKw8cRM8krg07qVgY3d-ZcNw1ciWw162w/s320/color+run.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This event isn't only for runners. According to the Color Run FAQ, "you can run, walk, crawl, or cartwheel if you wish." So there is no excuse not to enter this giveaway and do the Color Run!<br />
<br />
What are you waiting for? Enter the giveaway!!! You will receive one Color Run entry to the city of your choice!<br />

So, a goal setting post for YOU (and me) was necessary.<br />
<br />
In the January issue of Runner's World, there was a resolution guide, but it was unique. It gave you goals each month to help improve your overall running. Much more manageable than the goal of "getting better this year." After all, goals should be SMART:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://studentsuccess.unc.edu/setting-goals/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgU0vO0XrKD6_23tM-mt-vhWU2PrM05jhSJp7JEzTleEeKft_lIHp7EvTyDoTfqRlc-BOjo-MgNILB8lYFiODblFyGJWVwXzwlkrntm0_2zVDe8_vn3O36IUuO9jiULCPeLhfj98yhVwb5d/s320/goal+setting.jpg" width="235" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Okay, I will stop boring you now. I just had to put a little bit of geeky-ness in there. But for real, you shouldn't set a super broad goal without setting smaller steps in there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, I have kind of forgotten about it, but I saw that another blogger was doing some August goals, so I decided to dig out the old Runner's World (well the website actually), and commit to the August goal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The broad goal of August, as defined by <a href="http://www.runnersworld.com/advice/month-month-guide-fitter-faster-you?page=single" target="_blank">Runner's World</a>, is "Rediscover your Mojo." They must really be geniuses because this was just what I was needing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://www.seanverret.com/wpblog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/got_mojo.png" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="114" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUXyUAhswQsf_RzJKZ1W9dsiq73Z0jq7RIHk5bcJ1UAiOCMSZuaIkkYT0QJHm-x6sPp9qHgHLj48xrzX_EVpesKnDn_z6FsuhM3Q1CTJzUHHh59zrXHyr08cZz93DUhvtgYlIcS_bT8MRk/s320/got+mojo.png" width="320" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.seanverret.com/wpblog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/got_mojo.png" target="_blank">No, I need to rediscover it.</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There are five specific parts to the August goal of rediscovering your mojo:<br />
<div>
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
1. </blockquote>
</div>
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Head for the trails, where the shade will often be more plentiful than it is on a road. Plus, technical trails require concentration, which means you’ll be mentally engaged with your footing—not with the heat or your remaining mileage. </span> We have some trails around here, but not too many. Maybe I will try the beach too? It kind of defeats the purpose of the shade, but I could do it early morning.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.visit-historic-charleston.com/Charleston-SC-Beaches.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUOVU40xTJKH-i0FSEbFkkY5B9BjleGcX6INsYEMq74mUYjQ_rntpG7CEMyRtojh5brdoAaKotnLL5GHJk7bpdlOBTdweoarafS7ddgbGCijOVrt6V0Ne5CTDS7g3qk2MxMBJZe7ZQe2DB/s320/beach.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
2. <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Schedule the workouts you like to do: If you really like hill repeats or despise tempo runs, run accordingly. “It may not be perfect physiologically,” says Leivers, “but if it’s a workout you’re excited for, you’re more likely to actually do it.”</span></blockquote>
I start official half-marathon training the third week of August, but I will try to do some fun things between now and then. I really like hill repeats. They are hard, but I like them (I have no clue why). I also really like tempo runs because I feel legit. I mean I get to run fast. Who doesn't like that? I am not a huge fan of long runs, but I am beginning to like them more (which is a good thing because they are pretty important to a half-marathon buildup). Spoiler alert: September's goal is mastering the long run, so I am pretty excited about that. Why haven't I been doing these goals the whole year?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://carise.deviantart.com/art/Cooper-River-Bridge-2-187951692" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="136" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4YaAVi2wp2bz8w52FnGmwfKJZsOgc5itHP6X64NBbf1hhzQ_DpXzn9COrxoniQcgPVlCU_PrT-o_ZSO07pfn_8FenxSCTLqHr6w_404wlRvVuVi4L2K6sWdxrllemu34Em7VZCQ5Gv-F3/s400/bridge.jpg" width="400" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://carise.deviantart.com/art/Cooper-River-Bridge-2-187951692" target="_blank">The only hill in Charleston. Well pretty much the only one.</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
3. <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Revisit—or set new—both short- and long-term goals. “Give yourself four-week, three-month, and six-month goals,” says Baker. “Once your goals are out of your head and on paper, they are closer to happening.” </span></blockquote>
4-Week Goal: Be consistent in half training. I want to only have missed two runs for the scheduled runs of the month. Unless something terrible happens, then I will adjust.<br />
<br />
Three-Month Goal: By November 1st, I want to have blogged twice a week every week. I know, not really running related, but it will keep me reliable for my training.<br />
<br />
Six-Month Goal: Sub-2:00 half marathon. That is technically a 4.5 month goal because I want it to happen by the end of the year at Kiawah. And if it doesn't happen then, you can bet I will be signing up for the Charleston 1/2 Marathon in January. But only as a last resort. I have heard the course isn't that great.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizsOa-ioh_YYgjiqTse_31vhlXKIPz5YXE7x0lG3ypU_rpasSE2SoBsUBo53WkIe5ILzn60ePtFoovKzQW__Wp0XHVg8G85wJrNj3eJjIdqmfNrQzoUBXlv5SVuhQLYoLgcByYNJAFfsS7/s1600/clock.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="120" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizsOa-ioh_YYgjiqTse_31vhlXKIPz5YXE7x0lG3ypU_rpasSE2SoBsUBo53WkIe5ILzn60ePtFoovKzQW__Wp0XHVg8G85wJrNj3eJjIdqmfNrQzoUBXlv5SVuhQLYoLgcByYNJAFfsS7/s320/clock.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Well actually 1:59:99</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
4. <span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Sign up for a short-for-you race—could be a 5-K, could be a trail half-marathon. “The immediate satisfaction you feel from crossing a finish line can kick-start the rest of your training,” says Underhill.</span></blockquote>
I am running the ALS HOPE Race 5K in September so kind of delayed, but it will be fun and it is for a great cause. Check out runs for ALS in your area. They are for an AWESOME CAUSE!<br />

I probably should go.<br />

<br />
I have decided to make some adjustments to my blog-- nothing major, but just some things like adding social media icons, some new tabs, maybe actually categorizing my posts, ect.<br />
<br />
Bear with me in the next few weeks- there might be something looking kind of wonky when you visit my blog, but it is all for the best. I promise. Even if you aren't interested in blogging/ are going to skip this post, I would still like to hear from you:<br />
-What is your favorite blog (design-wise and writing/content-wise)?<br />
-Is there anything obvious (or not) that I need to include on my side bar, ect?<br />
<br />
I am not going to give any of my own advice on blogging (yet) because I still have a ton to learn, and any suggestions would be welcome, but I will share a few websites with you that I have found tutorials on, ect. (If you have more, PLEASE let me know! I would love to learn!) <br />
<br />
1. Codeacademy- I have not completed it yet, but it has a great HTML 101 course that has been helpful. During this whole design process thing, I haven't done anything major with HTML coding, but it has come in handy when playing with my social media icons, ect.<br />
<br />

2. 10 Blogging Commandments- these are nothing super specific, but they are good things to keep in mind.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Social Media Buttons and Tutorials- I don't have them up yet, but I have been working on them. Believe it or not-- my blog has a twitter. Don't get too excited, I haven't started using it yet, but soon it will be filled with all sorts of running (and non-running) tweets! So follow up! I might even get crazy with an Instagram and even a Facebook page-- so watch the icons. If you want some for your blog, you can Google "Free Social Media Icons" or use the link from Her New Leaf that I am using.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The whole "Primp My Blog" series on Her New Leaf is great. She includes guest post instructions, signature image creation techniques (which I desperately need to do-- the little pictures with your blog name on it that looks super cute and everybody else has), free fonts, and pin it buttons. Basically everything.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For you to answer:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Favorite blog?</div>

Runner's World Run StreakYes, I am still here. Yes, I have been running (kind of). No, I have not been blogging! I am back though!<br />
<br />
Anyway, more on my first ever running streak! Officially, I completed 35 days because I couldn't run until July 4th (I had to go out of town on June 30), but I ran every single day!!!! I took the week out of town as a rest week, and boy were my legs ready. My brain was very confused when it did not have to find time to run on July 1st! I ran every single day of June! Crazy! I went into the streak knowing that I would not be able to finish it the last few days, but I am still very happy with my results! It was definitely the motivation I needed to run frequently, even during the hot summer months. I will absolutely do this again, especially if there is a race I need to rebound from, whether it be a race that didn't go so well (I am looking at you Diva's Half Marathon) or if I just need some motivation to keep running after my goal races.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">How I felt some days!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Did I think it drastically improved my training? / Do I think I should do this more often?<br />
Not exactly. While I was running everyday, some of my runs got replaced with one-milers just because I was tired- so my mileage was kept about the same, it was just spread out over the week with no rest days. I am glad I did this, however, because I am going to follow the Hanson's Half-Marathon plan so upping the number of days running was useful.<br />

<br />
Would you rather?<br />
<br />
1. Never watch TV again or never run again?<br />
Never watch TV again- don't get me wrong, I LOVE lots of TV shows, but I would take a run over a TV show any day.<br />

2. Run 100 mph or fly 10 mph?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am not a huge fan of heights so I would have to say run 100 mph.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

3. Only be able to run and not walk or only be able to walk and not run?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Running all the time. It would save a lot of time.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4. Have to give up running for a year with the promise that you will BQ (Boston Qualify) when you resume, or never be able to BQ but run as much as you want?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I would give up running for a year because I REALLY want to run Boston one day. #bucketlist</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
5. Be injury free and a slow runner or a fast runner with constant injuries?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't like taking time off so I would have to say be injury free and a slow runner- kind of like right now.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
6. Be a barefoot runner or wear running shoes all the time (even to sleep)?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
SHOES! I have lots of respect for barefoot runners, but I like shoes to protect my feet from snakes, bugs, glass, the outdoors, rocks.......</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
7. Hydrate during a run with mayonaise or wasabi?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Mayonaise. I can't stand super spicy things- especially in the volume it would take to actually hydrate me. I don't even like mayonaise though.<br />

8. Run with your eyes closed or run with your ankles tied together?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Eyes closed. I could have somebody guide me, but I am not sure how much running I would get done with my ankles tied together.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

This is getting pretty ridiculous. Everyday that I have wanted to go on a decent run I have been stopped by the rain! Today I really wanted to get about an hour of running in, but I only did a mile because it was thundering and lightninging. <---- That is a word. I promise. Good news: when you are running and trying not to get struck by lightning and/ or wet you run a LOT faster, <strike>even</strike> especially on an easy run.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Boo!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Before anyone goes safety-conscious on the whole lightning thing, I did count between lightning and thunder before I left the house and it was 25 sec apart. The recommended time is 30 seconds, according to Rob Fowler, so I thought I was ok. More good news: I didn't even see lightning on my run!<br />
<br />
I suppose I could have gotten on the elliptical when I got home, but I was hungry!!! Speaking of which, I might start WIAW (What I ate Wednesday) soon, but today's eating was at the opposite end of anything I want to share, and my stomach can feel it now. Think pizza, mac 'n cheese, soda. I am pretty sure the only veggies I ate all day were pea puffs from Trader Joe's and I am pretty sure those have about the same nutritional value as a potato chip. I feel super sluggish now. Lesson learned: if you want to work out, you must eat nutritiously!<br />
<br />
<br />
Enough ramblings from me: [runner] Texas Senator Wendy Davis can talk for 13 hours on the same topic! Regardless of political opinion, that is impressive. The Mizunos must have helped!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
2. My Nike+ GPS Watch<br />
I log my training on the Nike+ website so having a way to input the info is vital. Some people swear by "running naked"- without technology, but this is the one piece I need. If I want to run by effort, I just change the settings so I only see time elapsed or the time of day, but I always want to see my results AFTER my run!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeXJo5s4xO-bvbV9bb0LuT2Ubc60CTlax6KYPcnTOe8y280ozyJgHBQuVn99qBX7ozK-kIUx3aOv47YvIqe6kqes36f9Pe8vikHK99lmPaVnpL-w4ldfbJLl5KJSuLwvHQAxdVLCHzlaHs/s1600/13+-+6" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeXJo5s4xO-bvbV9bb0LuT2Ubc60CTlax6KYPcnTOe8y280ozyJgHBQuVn99qBX7ozK-kIUx3aOv47YvIqe6kqes36f9Pe8vikHK99lmPaVnpL-w4ldfbJLl5KJSuLwvHQAxdVLCHzlaHs/s320/13+-+6" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
3. Running Clothes- obviously<br />
I prefer something looser (a singlet type tank) on top and something more fitted on the bottom (I usually wear spandex shorts or capris). I got some Oiselle Rogas today and I am in love! I kind of wanted to go for a run when I got them, but I couldn't. <br />
<br />
4. Various Food<br />
I like bringing some food and water/ Nuun to snack on before and after the race. I usually pack an apple, some Nuun, and some pretzels or other starch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HTfb0eM9Yqg/Ua_G95XVSPI/AAAAAAAAASQ/Ba7VhDqdOKo/s1600/13+-+1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HTfb0eM9Yqg/Ua_G95XVSPI/AAAAAAAAASQ/Ba7VhDqdOKo/s320/13+-+1" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
5. Towel and Change of Clothes<br />
I don't want to drive back in gross clothes! Enough said.<br />
<br />
6. iPod (for longer races)<br />
I only use my iPod on long runs and during longer races where I need some sort of distraction. I have to wear it in an armband- I CANNOT carry it. It drives me crazy.<br />
<br />
7. Applesauce and other fuel for longer races.<br />
<br />
8. Band-Aids in case blisters develop. (Haven't had any problems with my new shoes!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnmTQk-GogBilndU7r2xkOnY-xha8HcVB256apKFkZNjslbsnnzg638y87jzZv_aK6Fc0iKHBww0q_FNbD-1RqPiYOILu424Tn9wSR5fZDM-ltwvuBgUgCpnZDqcdguSEEeeenPoXW6Pb4/s1600/13+-+2" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnmTQk-GogBilndU7r2xkOnY-xha8HcVB256apKFkZNjslbsnnzg638y87jzZv_aK6Fc0iKHBww0q_FNbD-1RqPiYOILu424Tn9wSR5fZDM-ltwvuBgUgCpnZDqcdguSEEeeenPoXW6Pb4/s320/13+-+2" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
9. Extra Hair Stuff- ponytail holders and headbands. I keep my hair simple on race day- high-ish ponytail and a hard plastic headband to keep the hair out of my face.<br />
<br />
10. Hat and Sunglasses- I have a hat that I really like that I wear most races to keep the sun out of my face. If it is really bright outside, I tote along my sunglasses that are obviously not made for running. Any suggestions on some relatively inexpensive running sunglasses?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lLLC6MdJgYo/UcS7HmUl2WI/AAAAAAAAAU0/3eMqpumR0Qk/s1600/13+-+1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lLLC6MdJgYo/UcS7HmUl2WI/AAAAAAAAAU0/3eMqpumR0Qk/s320/13+-+1" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
11. Hand Sanitizer- I am not really scared of germs, but it is nice to have after applying sunscreen and before driving back to not make your hands feel so gross.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBW1E5sj-1exNlAJjUYal2oCHTVy9tTV8NllbhG_-uw5FxNU3PXgS_EB72qUMGIwncdaUkgFY8WyA5gTTMf8Z7iiyuT8N4GT2eWBqOgZV2WvjWRDX8CMwZBOxqLCvKDyfQYMH5WL5kOtzJ/s1600/13+-+3" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBW1E5sj-1exNlAJjUYal2oCHTVy9tTV8NllbhG_-uw5FxNU3PXgS_EB72qUMGIwncdaUkgFY8WyA5gTTMf8Z7iiyuT8N4GT2eWBqOgZV2WvjWRDX8CMwZBOxqLCvKDyfQYMH5WL5kOtzJ/s320/13+-+3" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
12. RoadID<br />
<br />
13. Extra Safety Pins- I don't want the race to run out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVyE33IZ1iGW9OOPR2rHOMD6Wy5OT0ubBROYJWZ4T3yHEwE79zIoTqv6QNDdP2zBuKHOzSj6GLLS8JbUh3tCYPRMeN8O8x_m8yrJZExyG4b5x99aZexP9HFHfQOqdwFDNjS-Cjaov8ZxyY/s1600/13+-+4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVyE33IZ1iGW9OOPR2rHOMD6Wy5OT0ubBROYJWZ4T3yHEwE79zIoTqv6QNDdP2zBuKHOzSj6GLLS8JbUh3tCYPRMeN8O8x_m8yrJZExyG4b5x99aZexP9HFHfQOqdwFDNjS-Cjaov8ZxyY/s320/13+-+4" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
14. Chacos- Got to have something comfy to put on after the race.<br />

Happy National Running Day! I decided to post this tonight so I could give you a recap of what I did. Today was great. Having a holiday that honors my favorite pastime makes me feel like a celebrity. It is great!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgpy2zpgxSMfKrYJYswsjXyuRO-6c6AoJPdesDvfxsXaM4XQhKyxznyKq_HKMogMx2d3nOhZcCswahQ6oukLZljudRNopjsw0Tt5unWP8RNTCUh53Gy19cGayK3BBFUgpS0RTZ_dkAjlbu/s1600/I+run+because.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgpy2zpgxSMfKrYJYswsjXyuRO-6c6AoJPdesDvfxsXaM4XQhKyxznyKq_HKMogMx2d3nOhZcCswahQ6oukLZljudRNopjsw0Tt5unWP8RNTCUh53Gy19cGayK3BBFUgpS0RTZ_dkAjlbu/s320/I+run+because.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had to complete the "I run..." today for a giveaway. I had to think about that for a while. There were a lot of answers: I run to relieve stress, I run to stay in shape, ect. I couldn't decide on an answer so I thought about why I started running. The first 5K I ran was the ALS HOPE Race which is a race that is put on by the MUSC Occupational and Physical Therapy to benefit the ALS Association. ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's, is a disease that effects the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. My aunt was diagnosed with ALS so my family and I started doing these races to help raise money. I eventually wanted to <u>run</u> the race so I started running. Fast forward 6 years and I have run 2 half-marathons. I would have never thought that would have happened. I also run to remember my grandmother who was diagnosed with cancer around the same time. I run for my aunt and grandmother because they can't.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, on a cheerier note. What did I do and win today?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I woke up and entered some giveaways. I then went on a 4 mi run with some speed work in there. I ran a 1 mile warmup, the 2x(.5 mi sprint, .25 mi recover, .25 mi sprint, .25 mi recover) and then a .5 mi cool down. I then came home and entered some more giveaways. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I won some Nuun (2 bottles- lemon-lime and fruit punch) and a pair of socks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Socks that don't give me blisters. [Happy dance!]</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also bought a new shirt because I tried on some of my summer running clothes this week and they are yucky/ ill-fitting.</div>

That is what I did on National Running Day. What did you do?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span id="goog_826534387"></span><span id="goog_826534388"></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7932308824546671753.post-86608243392142520012013-06-04T21:16:00.000-04:002013-08-09T23:17:46.035-04:00Would you rather?This is a series of "Would you rather?" questions that I found on <a href="http://olivetorun.com/2013/03/24/would-you-rather-running-style-survey/" target="_blank">Olive to Run</a> and I thought they would be perfect so y'all could get to know me better as a runner.<br />
<br />
1. Would you rather run a 5K or a marathon?<br />
<br />
I have never run a marathon before, and I probably won't run one for at least two more years, but I prefer longer distances any day. I am definitely not a natural runner, but I have had much more success increasing my endurance rather than my speed. I would definitely pick a half-marathon, which I have run, over a 5K.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjalH7v4q2DE1FcvsRjjFuNwWlrqyC26vf__M7qOWCECfe7LYvGlSnqul2JHDsOA50Njui5HGp6spSINQGOoHSrpDSTwn-lvPl0HgDTS_NqDs3T7hZeiYWR6FBhb4hGkarFy_olhNY2_pqu/s1600/Rock+n+Roll+DC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="129" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjalH7v4q2DE1FcvsRjjFuNwWlrqyC26vf__M7qOWCECfe7LYvGlSnqul2JHDsOA50Njui5HGp6spSINQGOoHSrpDSTwn-lvPl0HgDTS_NqDs3T7hZeiYWR6FBhb4hGkarFy_olhNY2_pqu/s320/Rock+n+Roll+DC.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I would love to run a race in DC one day.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Would you rather run in the heat of summer or the icy winter?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like the warm summer much more than the cold winter. My success in fall races over spring races can attest to this because I despise training in the cold so I have a much more substantial training base from the summer than from the winter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Would you rather have new running shoes or a new running outfit?</div>
<br />
I would much rather have a new pair of running shoes. I am pretty picky about my running clothes, but if absolutely necessary, I would go for a run in (gasp) a cotton t-shirt and plain old athletic shorts. Shoes are what keep me safe from injury and I use the same pair over many runs in a row so I would prefer a new pair of shoes over running clothes.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XAGB_UosPWE/Ua6HQEiuI6I/AAAAAAAAAQw/_QdmKipgqlY/s1600/13+-+1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XAGB_UosPWE/Ua6HQEiuI6I/AAAAAAAAAQw/_QdmKipgqlY/s400/13+-+1" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My running shoes from oldest ---> newest. There are a couple of pairs missing. I think they one of those pairs is in my car!? The ones on the right I only have 40 miles on, but I really like my new Brooks Launch shoes so far.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div>
4. Would you rather run alone or in a group?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I would rather run alone. My long runs can sometimes get lonely, but I like being able to move around the time and pace of runs (although it would help to have somebody to hold me accountable). I do love the race atmosphere with a bajillion people around me though.<br />
<br /></div>
5. <span style="border: 0px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Would you rather run next to someone in a race who tries to talk to you constantly or someone who breathes heavy and grunts?</span></span><br />
<span style="border: 0px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span></span><span style="border: 0px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I would rather have someone talk to me. I love talking, especially during long races. During my first half marathon, I don't even remember 5 of the miles because I was talking to someone.</span></span><br />
<span style="border: 0px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
</span></span><span style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 21px;">6. Would you rather run a race because of the </span></span><span style="line-height: 21px;">convenience</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 21px;"> (location, price, travel) or the swag?</span></span></span><br />
<span style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 21px;"><br />
</span></span></span> <br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I love me some swag, but ultimately if a race is convenient I am more likely to do it. I would love to run some major half-marathons and eventually marathons (I love big races), but they are just so far away that it isn't realistic, however I am hoping to travel to go run the Princess Half-Marathon at Disney in February.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.rundisney.com/princess-half-marathon/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMKNN9OjcAoQeVjTzxvHDoUv_2WBvh4IelLiAdKj9B8FVr5PLnlOLlfVkTkgXvsJr8GnHHnutaTcfTVqx6gzcM_0-n3SL2kFG8N4mwbw5ZPsDBU1YPbchXdNFQH1uHyb9NMrP2s3TdV3FL/s320/princess-half-marathon-230x150-03.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.rundisney.com/princess-half-marathon/" target="_blank">Mickey and Minnie Mouse</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
7. Would you rather run a race with a group of friends or by yourself?<br />
<br />
I would rather run it by myself. I wouldn't mind sharing the race weekend with friends, but I want to run the actual race by myself. I also would not mind running with a friend if they needed support (pacing, moral support, ect.), but I don't want to run a goal race with other people.<br />
<br />
8. Would you rather run a PR but result in an injury or finish strong and miss a PR?<br />
<br />
I would take finishing strong without a PR because there will be other races to run to get that PR, but I don't want to have to sit out of running for an extended period of time. <br />

9. Would you rather eat a big meal the night before or a big meal after a race?<br />
<br />
Big meal after a race. I will eat a pretty good amount the night before a race, but I am careful not to eat too much so I don't run into GI problems (no pun intended). After a race, I will eat EVERYTHING in sight. On the way back from my last half-marathon, I just wanted to stop at every food establishment between the race and my house where my grandmother was making shrimp and grits.<br />
<br />
10. Would you rather be chased by a swarm of bees or a pack of dogs?<br />
<br />
I would rather be chased by a pack of dogs. Big dogs, for the most part, don't scare me. I have grown up with one so, unless unusually vicious, I would rather deal with dogs. Bee stings are painful. Enough said.<br />

Sign me up. I am going to run at least one mile everyday from now until Labor Day! It will be hard in this heat, but I am excited because I have always wanted to do a running streak.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtnnx6C4Zolq1j6tyAhd75aRpHuvTLe2Q4to59XHnH1aff4y-v6YHHSeUy__OcnhTXFDY18wx7nmJmLVkUSF6qpIJZ4VRWC8B3Aufx8CrDRIbkWGsOWusAiYe-nUck2ZTIZKTnqzYKcift/s1600/runners-world-rwrunstreak-pardon-my-streaking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtnnx6C4Zolq1j6tyAhd75aRpHuvTLe2Q4to59XHnH1aff4y-v6YHHSeUy__OcnhTXFDY18wx7nmJmLVkUSF6qpIJZ4VRWC8B3Aufx8CrDRIbkWGsOWusAiYe-nUck2ZTIZKTnqzYKcift/s400/runners-world-rwrunstreak-pardon-my-streaking.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am pretty excited about this because this is my first "streak." Today I did three miles, but it had a hill in it so it counts as a "super 3-miler" to someone from flat land. I ran the bridge and it was PACKED. Mental note to self: never run the bridge on a holiday/ Saturday!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are still a few more hours in the day if anybody wants to join me! :)</div>

Stacy's Cinnamon Sugar Pita Chips- they bring a flavor party to my mouth! YUM! You should try them out some time because they are definitely one of my favorite snack foods.<br />
<br />
<br />
2. Pita Chips with Roasted Red Pepper Hummus- both were on sale this week at Harris Teeter, so of course I had to buy some. It is so good!<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
3. Chobani Flips- I had my first one this week. It was the Key Lime Crumble, and it tasted just like Key Lime Pie. I can't wait to try the others because I have heard that the almond and chocolate one is very good.<br />
<br />
4. Long Days- morning and evening runs in the light!!!<br />
<br />
5. Nuun- I got my first box today, and it is perfect. I was so excited that I drank my first bottle while swimming/ running today only 15 minutes after I received the box. I ordered pink lemonade, and it is yummy without being overly sweet so I can drink it while I am working out and not want to gag.<br />

<br />
I ran the Diva's Half-Marathon in North Myrtle Beach. I went up to Myrtle Beach on Saturday afternoon (the race was on Sunday). Saturday I went to go get my packet at the expo. The expo was mediocre. It was well organized, but it was small. I guess I am just spoiled by the Bridge Run expo in my hometown so other expos seem like a disappointment. I got my packet, walked around for a few minutes, but then I left to go visit a couple of stores at the outlets and then go get some pasta.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iePfXxpRuqc/UY2xA3vn9ZI/AAAAAAAAANo/MUakww2zrmk/s1600/13+-+1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iePfXxpRuqc/UY2xA3vn9ZI/AAAAAAAAANo/MUakww2zrmk/s640/13+-+1" width="480" /></a></div>
So they had a bit of a shirt problem. The shirts were supposed to be women's sizes, but they ended up being more like kids sizes. I got a small because I was worried about how small the women's sizes would be, and it barely covers my belly button and it is quite tight. Luckily, they had a system to get the shirts replaced and I should be getting mine in a few weeks.<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1qJnA89XgXw/UY2xA70HIoI/AAAAAAAAANw/2WDdS8xfPmk/s1600/13+-+2" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1qJnA89XgXw/UY2xA70HIoI/AAAAAAAAANw/2WDdS8xfPmk/s400/13+-+2" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My bib.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div>
I woke up race morning late so we rushed to the start line (not a good way to start a race morning). I did not have time to stretch so I felt that at mile 4. The entire race was tight which I think was primarily because of me forgetting the night before, and then not having enough time race morning. I learned that stretching during a race takes up a lot of valuable minutes. No good. I also woke up not feeling much better from the nasty cold I had been suffering all week. I tried to keep a positive attitude on race morning, but between being late and sick, I wasn't expecting much out of the race.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Miles 1-6 were okay. It was just running. Nothing too exciting. The course wasn't too exciting and I knew I had a long race ahead of me.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Miles 7-9 were where things got tough. I really felt the effects of not properly stretching and I also had some nutrition issues.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Mile 10 was rough. I was definitely starting to get sore. That was not good. I also became extremely unmotivated and was just searching for my parents just to get some sort of motivation. I definitely started to feel the effects of being sick- I could barely breath through my nose and my energy was zapped. I think I need to work on my nutrition strategy some too. Any suggestions?<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I don't really remember where that was, but I am pretty sure that was a fake smile.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Miles 11-13 felt sooooo long. There was nothing I could seem to do to make them go by faster.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I finished in 2:18:56. I was disappointed in my time after spending so much time and effort to prepare for it only to be sick on race day, but at the end of the day I am still proud that I finished my second half-marathon. I have a lot of races ahead of me. I am super excited about Kiawah. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, I would recommend this race to someone who lives close and just wants to do a run on a flat and fast course, but there wasn't really anything too exciting. One thing that I loved about this race was the enthusiastic spectators. There were a lot of people with really funny signs that made me laugh even through my mile 10 crash. One thing that I didn't like so much is that the 5K runners and walkers shared the course for part of it, and at the time I was hitting the part of the course that we shared, there were a lot of 5K walkers and half-marathon runners in a relatively small area.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I better go to sleep so I can wake up to run a 5K tomorrow. I don't really have any expectations for it. It is mostly just a race to gauge where my current 5K time is to set a goal for the fall, but I do love races- big and small, long and short. They are what keeps me running- even the ones that I didn't do well in give me motivation to do better in the next race.<br />
